Yamaha is taking the next step with its electric motocross project. The YE-01 Racing Concept will make an exhibition run at the 2026 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Ernée, France, with the event getting underway on October 2.
The prototype is being developed as part of Yamaha’s plan to eventually compete in MXEP, the upcoming electric motocross racing series. Rather than starting from a completely separate platform, Yamaha has combined its motocross chassis experience with electric powertrain technology developed together with French manufacturer Electric Motion.
YZ450F DNA, Electric Power
The YE-01 uses chassis technology derived from the YZ450F, giving Yamaha a familiar motocross base for the electric project. The frame has been specifically developed around the concept, with the goal of retaining the control, stability and rider connection expected from Yamaha’s competition bikes.
At the centre of the project is a dedicated electric power unit jointly developed by Yamaha and Electric Motion. Yamaha first presented the YE-01 publicly at EICMA in 2025, but the MXoN demonstration will move the bike from the show stand to the track in front of a racing audience.
Yes, It Has a Clutch
One of the most interesting details is the mechanical clutch, something still unusual on an electric motocross bike. Yamaha says the clutch allows the rider to control drive force with the lever, keeping more of the familiar interaction and precision associated with a conventional motocross machine.
That detail says a lot about the direction of the project. Yamaha does not appear to be trying to make the YE-01 feel completely alien; the aim is to keep the important parts of the motocross riding experience while using the advantages of electric power.
Built With MXEP in Mind
The YE-01 is still officially a Racing Concept, not a production motorcycle. Yamaha has not announced production specifications such as weight, battery capacity, range or a showroom launch date in this latest announcement.
What is clear is that the project is being developed with competition in mind. Yamaha says the exhibition run is part of its preparation for potential future participation in MXEP, where electric prototypes are expected to race alongside selected FIM Motocross World Championship events.
From EICMA to the Track
Seeing the YE-01 moving in real motocross conditions should be considerably more interesting than another static concept reveal. The MXoN exhibition will offer the first real public look at how Yamaha’s combination of YZ450F chassis thinking, Electric Motion technology and a rider-controlled clutch translates onto dirt.
For now, the YE-01 remains a prototype. But taking it to one of the biggest motocross events in the world makes it clear that Yamaha’s electric racing project is moving beyond the concept-bike stage
