Day Five at the 99th ISDE in Bergamo threw mud, rain, and fatigue at the riders—but Italy just shrugged it off and put the whole thing on ice. Starting the day with nearly a seven-minute gap over Sweden, they cruised through four shortened special tests and stretched that lead to a whopping eight minutes. Barring any last-minute wipeouts in tomorrow’s Final Cross Test, Italy is on the cusp of its first World Trophy win since 2021.
Samuele Bernardini (Italy):
“With tough conditions today, it was important to be safe and stay in front. As a team, we all did what we needed to do, and now the end of the 6DAYS® Italia is in sight. Tomorrow, I hope to get a good start in the Final Cross Test and give my best.”
Behind Italy, Sweden pushed France to third, and now hold about a two-minute buffer to guarantee runner-up status. France, sitting third and nearly ten minutes behind the leaders, are now just fighting for the last podium spot. Meanwhile, the battle for fourth remains fiery: USA reclaimed P4, nudging Spain to P5 by a slim 36 seconds, while Australia lurks in P6, just a minute back.
In the Junior ranks, it’s tense. France notched their third straight day win, but Italy aren’t done yet—they’re still holding a 59-second lead as they push into the final day. Australia trails in third, about three and a half minutes back, while the USA and Spain duke it out for fourth.
Alex Puey (Spain):
“It was a tricky day with the weather, so it was a case of being safe and not making any major mistakes. We are in a good position as a team, holding fifth with a chance of better, so we will keep pushing on until the very end.”
The USA Women’s team are absolutely smashing it—35 minutes and 46 seconds ahead of Australia, they’re basically holding the trophy in their hands.
Spain’s Josep García is riding through pain—and still dominating. Even with a mangled hand, he grabbed fastest time in the opening test, and sealed another outright individual win by sweeping the final test. That brings him to his third Day win this week.
García:
“With the overnight rain, conditions were not easy today. But I’m happy to be back on top again, even with some crashes and mistakes. I’m focused on pushing again tomorrow.”
Mikael Persson (Sweden):
“It was really muddy and a lot of rain. I enjoyed it a lot and had a good day, going third again. I’m pleased with how I have been riding this week and looking forward to Day Six.”
